Assistant Headteacher- Designated Safeguarding Lead job summary


We are looking for a dynamic, creative leader who is looking to move into senior leadership and who is passionate about the growth and development of staff and also is committed to the highest level the safeguarding of children and young people.


The Assistant Headteacher role at Avalon School is focused on the Personal Development of children and young people and encompasses all elements of this area. The successful candidate will:

  • Act as Designated Safeguarding Lead and Designated Teacher for the school
  • Oversee Personal Development across the school, including oversight and development of the PSHE, RSE and wider safeguarding curriculum
  • Monitor behaviour across the school, ensuring swift action and interventions are put in place and measuring and reporting impact
  • Monitoring attendance across the school
  • Acting as Wellbeing Champion for the school
  • Overseeing EHCP, provision mapping and leading the Annual review process for the school, ensuring that children and young people are at the centre


The school is a small community special school for children and young people in Year 7 to 14 (age 11 - 19 years). The school has around 80 pupils who join the school from local primary schools. All the children and young people have an Education, Health and Care Plan in place.

The school is part of The Bower Learning Partnership which is a small federation of 2 special schools and works in partnership with the Pupil Referral Units in Somerset. The school and wider partnership can offer the successful candidate:

There will be a teaching commitment to this role of up to 2 days, this will be flexible at any time to meet the needs of the school and can include direct teaching, supporting, modelling and coaching other staff.
